What is 18k gold vermeil?

18K gold vermeil involves applying a thick layer of 18K gold to a base of sterling silver. 18K gold vermeil is 75% pure gold and 15% alloy. Jewelry manufacturers choose 18K gold for the outer plating over 100% pure gold (also known as 24K gold) because 18K gold is more durable.

Is vermeil real gold?

Yes—gold-vermeil jewelry is considered real gold! To be legally considered gold-vermeil jewelry, it must be plated with at least a 2.5-micron layer of 10K gold (five times thicker than regular gold plating)! Gold vermeil is typically electroplated onto a sterling silver base.

The main difference between gold-vermeil jewelry and solid gold is that gold-vermeil jewelry uses a sterling silver base metal, while solid gold jewelry is, as the name suggests, made of... gold! While gold-vermeil jewelry may not be considered 100% "real gold" due to the thicker plating, its quality is no less than that of solid gold jewelry.

Will gold-vermeil silver jewelry tarnish?

Gold-vermeil silver jewelry can tarnish, but with proper care, tarnishing can be prevented. Tarnishing occurs when various metals react with air or moisture to form copper dioxide (which appears brown or black). Environmental factors such as humidity, sweat, lotions, and perfume increase the likelihood of tarnishing.

Gold-vermeil silver jewelry is made of sterling silver, which is thankfully less prone to tarnishing than copper-based, brass-based, and nickel-containing jewelry.
